Helping stray cats in the UAE - Trap Neuter Return

Stray Cats in the UAE

With thousands of stray cats in the UAE, individual rescuers and shelters are completely overwhelmed with cases. Community cat carers are facing huge vet bills, food bills and are paying to care for these straybies out of their own pockets.

You just have to look at Facebook cat groups in the UAE to understand the help that is needed for these cats. Too often we see people posting asking for help, when the reality is, there’s just so many cats that need help, and not enough people to help them. Our motto is – ‘if you see something, you can do something’, which is why we’ve put together a list of vets in the UAE that offer stray rates for neutering and spaying, or better known as TNR ( Trap, Neuter, Return ).

We know that without TNR efforts, the number of strays suffering on the streets will only increase. More kittens will be born, more mouths to feed, and not enough people willing to adopt these cats.

People will always choose to buy ‘on trend’ breeds, whether that be Persian cats, Scottish Folds, British Blues, Maine Coons and so on. Typically the ‘ UAE street cat’ also know as the ‘Arabian Mau’ get overlooked when it comes to adoption. However, that’s not to say that these ‘designer breeds’ don’t end up on the streets too, because they do!

Being a pet parent to both a rescue Persian and a rescue Mau, my honest opinion…. I love them both equally, they are my world. But my Persian cat has been born with breathing difficulties due to her breed, allergies, watery eyes and requires much more day to day care than my Mau. She is limited to travel because of her breed ( flat faced dogs and cats can only fly at certain times of the year ) and she is extra sensitive to the heat. All cats deserve a safe, loving home, and if you’re thinking of welcoming a cat into your family, please don’t over look the ‘street cats’ – adopt don’t shop!

We all need to play a part in animal welfare, and although some may not have the ability to trap cats to TNR, you can help towards TNR costs.

We’ve put together a list of vets that responded to us when asked about TNR stray rates. Here are the one’s who responded in the UAE…

How do you I know if a stray cat has been neutered or spayed?

You can normally tell a cat has been TNR’d or spayed (female) neutered (male) by looking at their ears. Once vets have performed surgery, the cat’s ear is normally ‘tipped’. It is easier to tell if a male cat has been neutered as they will no longer have their testicles, however, it is impossible to tell if a female cat has been spayed without surgery. Therefore, to make it easier to identify, a cat’s ear will be tipped.

It’s important to note, that a cat on the street with an ear tip, may not, in fact, live on the street. Rescuers may have already neutered and spayed a cat and found them a loving home through adoption.
