Pet Grooming in the UAE

As a dog or cat owner you will know, sometimes our furry friends can get a little stinky and leave your home covered in hair. Sometimes our pets need a helping hand to keep them clean, feeling fresh, smelling fresh and ensuring they are feeling their best all year round.

With two Persian cats, an Arabian Mau and two Bulldogs, each of my fur kid has their own grooming routine. For example, my Persian cats need to be trimmed and bathed regularly, where as my Arabian Mau doesn’t ( he is very low maintenance ). My bulldogs need their faces wiped most days and a good brush every week with a bath as and when needed. All of my kids need regular nail trimming which I often do myself.

Every cat and dog will have different needs when it comes to grooming, so we caught up with the lovely Rebecca, owner of Boop Grooming in Dubai, and asked her about pet grooming in the UAE.

What’s the most common problem you see when grooming pets?

We always make sure to inform our clients when we notice any health issues during grooming, sometimes the owners are not aware of any problems. So grooming is a great first alert to any issues, then the owner can book a consultation with a veterinarian. The most common problems we encounter when grooming pets include:

Matting and Tangling: Mats are clumps of fur that have become tangled, often close to the skin, causing discomfort and potential skin issues.

Overgrown Nails: Long nails can cause pain, discomfort, and even lead to issues with walking or joint problems.

Skin Issues: Skin problems such as dryness, rashes, hot spots, or infections are often discovered during grooming.

Ear Infections: Build up of wax and debris in the ears can lead to infections, particularly in breeds with floppy ears.

Dental Problems: Bad breath, tartar build up, and gum disease can be identified during grooming.

Parasites: Fleas, ticks, and mites are commonly found during grooming, causing itching, irritation, and health issues.

How do you know when your pet needs grooming?

Regular grooming for your pet is essential. It depends on the breed mostly, but the tell tail signs are:

Matted Fur: Tangled or knotted hair can cause discomfort and skin issues.
Shedding: Excessive shedding can indicate the need for a good brushing.
Odour: A noticeable smell can be a sign that your pet needs a bath.
Dirty Coat: Visible dirt or debris in your pet’s fur.
Long Nails: If you hear your pet’s nails clicking on the floor, it’s time for a trim.
Eye Discharge: Excessive tearing or discharge around the eyes.
Ear Dirt: Build up of wax or debris in the ears.
Bad Breath: This can be a sign of dental issues that require attention.

What can pet parents do themselves at home in between grooming sessions?

It’s really important for pet parents with longer haired and double coated breeds to brush their pets daily and for shorter hair breeds once or twice a week. Regular brushing helps remove any tangles which can lead to matting and also, it’s a positive bonding experience for the pet and pet parent! Sometimes our little ones can have accidents where poop can get stuck to their fur, so we suggest buying some natural, fragrance-free wipes to help clean the area.

How long does it take to groom a cat and a dog?

This depends on a number of factors such as size, coat type, behaviour and what type of haircut the client wants, but on average full grooming for a small dog is around 1 hour and for a cat around 45 mins to 1 hour. For senior and nervous pets, we tend to take a bit longer as they require some rest breaks and cuddles!

Do cats really hate baths?

The idea that cats universally hate baths is a common belief, but the reality is more nuanced. While many cats do indeed dislike being bathed, there are various reasons for this aversion and some exceptions. If the cat gets used to being bathed when younger they are usually more tolerant, also we have found some cats may have had a negative experience before when being bathed which builds up fear, this is quite common, and an experienced groomer will know how to calm and handle the cat professionally.

What breed of cat and dog do you groom the most?

For dogs it’s definitely Golden Retrievers and Toy Poodles and for cats it’s Persians and Scottish Folds. We also groom a lot of rescues such as Desert dogs and Arabian Maus, which I think is wonderful because they deserve extra pampering!

What’s the strangest grooming request you’ve had from a pet parent?

Haha good question, probably the oddest request is to groom five sheep, which we declined as sheep shears are not part of our inventory!

Why did you start Boop?

I was trying to find a good mobile grooming experience for my two Pomeranians at the time Maxi & Honey Bee. After trying a few different companies, I was never entirely satisfied for different reasons. I had just finished my MBA and had previous experience managing a veterinary clinic for many years, so I decided to combine my experience and passion for pets together and start BOOP. I am very proud of how far we have come in two years, and we are always improving the services to ensure we give the pet and pet parent the best possible experience with mobile pet grooming.
